My Students:
The White House Decision Center provides students a unique opportunity for hands-on collaborative learning. The setting is a recreated West Wing in the Truman Library. The White House Decision Center challenges students to play the role of President Truman or one his advisers and learn how decisions are made at the highest levels of government.
My Project:
Our students will participate in a simulation focusing on postwar civil rights in the decision to desegregate the United States armed forces. By assuming the role of Truman or one of his advisers, students will develop the skills of reading and information gathering using authentic primary sources from era. They will compare and contrast multiple points of views, practice speech writing and public speaking and finally work together to craft evidence-based decisions for a complex problem.
My Students Need:
Our students will need assistance providing transportation to the Truman Library and supplement curriculum materials. We will require at least 5 buses for 140 students.
