Problem Solving GPS
Joel Adell, Olathe South High School, $1,000

Geometry, algebra and calculus students will step outside the text book and use GPS units to gather real outdoor measurement data and then utilize that data in the mathematics learning process. Participating in the problem-solving process from beginning to end in a practical application will make learning real and understandable. The Foundation was able to reach out to Garmin who donated twelve GPS units for this program.

IT Meets AT
Kenneth Gandy, Millcreek Center, $2,550

A PC-based scanner system to be used on vehicles in both the automotive technology and collision programs will allow students to complete tasks at both industry standards as well as national certification education standards. The system will allow over 100 AT students each year to obtain real-world work experience.

Phoenix Learning Library
John Laffoon, Claire Learning Center, $1,850

Book shelves and high-interest reading materials will provide a functional library learning space and resources for students with severe deficits in reading abilities. Students will now be able to participate in teacher-led instruction in a library learning environment similar to what they might experience in a traditional school setting.

Indian Creek Extended Learning
Linda Voyles, Indian Creek Elementary School, $1,875

Approximately fifty English Language Learners will participate in this after-school tutorial program focusing on reading and math.

Saturday Scholars Sessions
Amy Hillman, Santa Fe Middle School, $2,500

Washington Elementary ELL fifth graders will pair with SFT Middle School sixth graders to improve targeted math skills. Olathe North and Olathe Northwest AVID students will serve as "teacher leaders" to assist certified educators during four-hour long Saturday sessions through March.

IT Extended Learning
Becky Vrbas, Indian Trail Middle School, $5,000

Foundation funds will pair with district assistance for this after-school tutoring program to assist sub group populations at this middle school improve reading and math skills.

Project Stars
Karey Ficken, California Trail Middle School, $2,520

Meetings twice weekly after school will help identified students with their reading and math skills. Each session will involve guided practice as a group and independent instruction.

MOVE Extending Learning
Melanie DeMoss, Arbor Creek Elementary School, $1,100

Selected students in grades 2 and 3 will participate in weekly after-school study sessions to help boost their reading assessment scores.

Focused Vocabulary Instruction and Math Facts Support
Mandy Shoemaker, Westview Elementary School, $2,225

First through fifth graders will meet two days per week after school for explicit vocabulary instruction to aid reading comprehension skills as well as development of math fact fluency studying fact families, multiples and factors.

Tutoring Tuesdays
Rod Smith/Susan Devine, Frontier Trail Middle School, $2,020

Students whose assessment scores identify them in need of additional tutoring to promote success will meet each week with certified staff for assistance within the areas of math and reading.
