Philanthropist [fi-lan-thruh-pist]

Click here and see what Olathe kindergartners say about Philanthropy

A philanthropist is an individual who takes effort or inclination to increase the well-being of human kind, by charitable aid or donations. When you think of philanthropy you might think of a very old, very educated old man who has lots of money to give away. Or maybe you think of people like Bono or Oprah. Even the television show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition could be considered a philanthropic program.

The problem is that most of us don’t have as much money as the rich very old, very educated man, but you don’t have to be rich to be a philanthropist. There are many ways to be philanthropic. In fact, YOU can be a philanthropist quite easily; perhaps you already are and don’t realize it! You might go through your closet (or the stack of clothes on your floor!) and donate some of those items that you really don’t wear any more to an organization like Goodwill or to a local shelter. You and some friends could raise money for a charitable cause like the Olathe Public Schools Foundation or organize a food drive for Harvesters. Perhaps you could become a YouthFriend and spend time reading to or teaching a skill to elementary students. Acts of philanthropy can take many different forms; just ask around and be creative.

Your acts of philanthropy will most certainly make you feel good about yourself because what you are doing---giving back---IS good. And a bonus is that those who review resumes or scholarship applications will notice because those who donate their time to giving back to their community are set apart from their peers.

Need help getting started? Give the Foundation a call. We’d love to help you out with suggestions and ideas that will get you connected and make you a true philanthropist.
